Algoma University Receives Inaugural Global Education for Peace Award from STAR Scholars Network

The STAR Scholars Network is proud to announce that Algoma University, located in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada, has been named the inaugural recipient of the Global Education for Peace Award. This prestigious award honors a higher education institution making significant contributions to promoting world peace through education. The award, unveiled on the occasion of the United Nations International Day of Peace, recognizes Algoma University’s commitment to fostering global citizenship, reconciliation, and cross-cultural understanding through its innovative programs and international collaborations.

Institutions applying for the Global Education for Peace Award were evaluated based on their course delivery, pedagogical approaches, community engagement, and their efforts to integrate global perspectives into the curriculum. The applications were reviewed by an international committee chaired by Dr. John C. Weidman, Professor Emeritus of Higher and International Development Education at the University of Pittsburgh, USA.

“The selection process was a collaborative effort, coordinated with a global team to ensure a comprehensive evaluation of each institution’s impact on promoting peace through education. Algoma University stood out for its unique approach to advancing global understanding and reconciliation through both academic excellence and community-based peace-building initiatives,” said Dr. Weidman.

Algoma University’s application highlighted its distinct contributions through its Faculty of Cross-Cultural Studies and Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. The university is deeply committed to decolonizing education, advancing Indigenous knowledge, and equipping students to address complex global challenges. These efforts reflect the university’s core mission of promoting reconciliation and healing, particularly with the Indigenous Anishinaabe community.

Dr. Uttam Gaulee, President of the STAR Scholars Network, praised the visionary leadership behind the award’s conceptualization. “The Global Education for Peace Award represents a milestone in our global mission to advance scholarship and research that fosters a humane and peaceful world. This award highlights how education can be a transformative force in shaping a better future for all,” Dr. Gaulee remarked.

Algoma University will be officially recognized during a special award ceremony during the STAR Global Conference in Kathmandu later this year. STAR Scholars Network congratulates Algoma University on this momentous achievement and looks forward to continued efforts worldwide to promote peace through education.
