Statement on the UN International Day of Peace: Cultivating a Culture of Peace

On this International Day of Peace, the STAR Scholars Network stands in solidarity with the global community in promoting the values of peace, dialogue, and mutual understanding. As we commemorate the 25th anniversary of the United Nations General Assembly’s Declaration on a Culture of Peace, we are reminded that peace is not merely the absence of conflict but a dynamic process built through dialogue, cooperation, and education. The principles of non-violence, respect for human rights, and justice, outlined by the UN, are essential in fostering a global culture of peace.

Today, we proudly announce the inaugural Global Education for Peace Award, recognizing Algoma University for its outstanding contributions to global peace through education. This initiative aligns with our belief that higher education institutions (HEIs) play a pivotal role in cultivating a culture of peace, as UNESCO has reminded us: “wars begin in the minds of men.” Through this award, we celebrate institutions that commit to advancing peace and understanding across generations and communities.

Together, let us continue to build bridges, foster dialogue, and promote a shared vision of peace for a better future.
