STAR Scholars Network Announces Professor Dr. Arjune Sen as Recipient of the STAR Humanitarian Award

Baltimore, MD — The STAR Scholars Network is proud to announce that Professor Dr. Arjune Sen, an internationally recognized neurologist and global health leader, has been selected as a recipient of the STAR Humanitarian Award for his outstanding contributions to advancing equitable epilepsy care worldwide.

Professor Sen serves as Professor of Global Epilepsy at the University of Oxford, Consultant Neurologist at Oxford University Hospitals, and Founder of the Centre for Global Epilepsy. Through his visionary leadership, he has pioneered multi-country initiatives across Africa, Asia, and Latin America aimed at addressing critical disparities in neurological care.

His work focuses on reducing diagnostic and treatment gaps through innovative, scalable approaches. Programs such as the Oxford Martin Programme on Global Epilepsy and EPInA have leveraged low-cost digital technologies, community-based education, and clinician training to expand access to care in underserved regions. These efforts have not only improved patient outcomes but have also strengthened health systems in resource-limited settings.

Beyond clinical innovation, Professor Sen has played a pivotal role in shaping global health policy. He co-authored the 2022 NICE Guidelines and contributed to securing World Health Organization Essential Medicines status for levetiracetam, a milestone that has significantly improved access to life-saving treatment worldwide.

“Professor Sen’s work exemplifies the mission of the STAR Humanitarian Award—bridging science, innovation, and compassion to advance equity on a global scale,” said Dr. Uttam Gaulee, President of the STAR Scholars Network. “His leadership has transformed epilepsy care for millions and stands as a powerful model of scholarship in service to humanity.”

The STAR Humanitarian Award recognizes individuals and organizations whose work demonstrates exceptional humanitarian impact, innovation, and transnational reach. Professor Sen’s contributions reflect a deep commitment to improving global health outcomes and ensuring that access to neurological care is not limited by geography or resources.

The award will be formally presented at an upcoming international gathering hosted by the STAR Scholars Network.
