
The STAR Scholars Network award committee announced Dr. Sanduk Ruit as the recipient of the 2025 STAR Humanitarian Award, our highest distinction for humanitarian innovation and global equity impact.

It is conferred upon an individual or organization whose work is both innovative and transformative, with proven or promising impact across multiple regions of the world. Recipients must demonstrate a commitment to advancing human welfare, education, and opportunity on a global scale.
Dr. Ruit, a pioneering ophthalmologist and the founder of the Tilganga Institute of Ophthalmology, exemplifies the values of this award. His groundbreaking work in developing low-cost cataract surgery has restored vision to over 180,000 people in worldwide, bringing hope and dignity to some of the world’s most underserved communities. His innovation and dedication reflect the essence of humanitarian leadership—equity-driven, globally impactful, and deeply human.
Dr. Ruit’s recognition underscores our shared mission to uplift those who serve humanity through knowledge, compassion, and cross-border collaboration. Dr. Ruit will be facilitated during an award ceremony in Baltimore on May 25, 2025.
