Statement on the International Day Against Nuclear Tests

As President of the STAR Scholars Network, I stand in solidarity with the global community on this International Day Against Nuclear Tests, reaffirming our commitment to fostering a peaceful and nuclear-weapon-free world. The horrifying legacy of over 2,000 nuclear tests since 1945, as highlighted by the United Nations, has demonstrated the catastrophic impact of nuclear weapons on human life and the environment. This observance, established by the UN General Assembly in 2009, serves as a critical reminder of the need to halt nuclear testing as a pivotal step toward achieving global disarmament and lasting peace (United Nations, 2009).

As the custodian of the Global Education Award, the STAR Scholars Network recognizes the profound responsibility of institutions of higher learning to incorporate peacebuilding and global citizenship into their programs. We believe that by educating future leaders about the catastrophic risks associated with nuclear weapons and the importance of disarmament, we can contribute to a safer, more just world. The Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT), though not yet in force, remains a critical tool in curbing the arms race and preventing the proliferation of nuclear weapons. We urge all nations to accelerate their efforts towards ratification, echoing the United Nations’ call for the complete elimination of nuclear weapons as the only absolute guarantee against their use (United Nations, 2009).

I concur with and support UN Secretary-General António Guterres’s statement: “On the International Day Against Nuclear Tests, the world must speak with one voice to end this practice once and for all.”

Let us join hands in advocating for the immediate entry into force of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) and ensure that every effort is made to advance the goal of a nuclear-weapon-free world. The commitment of civil society, academia, and international organizations is crucial in this endeavor. Together, we can secure a peaceful future for all.
