Dr. Luke Parker is an educator, researcher, and leader with extensive expertise in outdoor learning, artificial intelligence in education, and transnational research. Beginning his career as a teacher in Australian schools, he transitioned to academia at the Australian Catholic University. There, he honed his research skills, advanced his commitment to higher education, and earned a Dean’s Commendation for Excellence in Teaching. During his tenure as Education Officer at Outdoors Victoria, Dr. Parker has led the creation of over 40 teacher toolkits designed to integrate outdoor learning into curricula across all levels of education, including specialized resources for students with disabilities. His work, which has secured over $100,000 in grant funding, continues to provide invaluable support for educators in implementing outdoor learning practices.
In 2021, Dr. Parker commenced a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Kansas, focusing on the role of outdoor learning in U.S. education. His groundbreaking research represents the first nationwide study on the implementation and impact of outdoor learning in American schools using the innovative research methodology of web scraping. Graduated with Ph.D. Honors, his academic achievements reflect the rigor and excellence of his work. Beyond outdoor education, Dr. Parker has made significant contributions to artificial intelligence in
education, publishing extensively on AI’s transformative role in policy development and its integration into teaching, learning, and assessment. His research has directly influenced AI policies within U.S. institutions, ensuring equitable and ethical use of emerging technologies.
Dr. Parker has published extensively, including numerous peer-reviewed articles and book chapters on topics ranging from outdoor learning to the intersection of AI and higher education and comprehensive work for international students looking to move to the United States for higher education.
Over the past four years, he has presented his work at more than 30 state, national, and international conferences, addressing curriculum innovation, outdoor learning, artificial intelligence, and transnational research. At the prestigious 2024 Capitol Graduate Research Summit, Dr. Parker was awarded the University of Kansas Overall Winner for his presentation to Kansas legislators and senators on the implications of AI in the state. Notably, he was one of only three education-related speakers at AI4, the world’s largest AI conference, where he shared insights on AI in higher education with leaders from billion-dollar companies.
As a leader, Luke has served as Acting Graduate Student Body President at the University of Kansas, where he championed initiatives to support graduate students’ academic and professional growth. He founded and chaired the university’s first education-focused graduate research conference, attracting over 30 submissions, and mentored numerous graduate students, co-authoring over ten publications with his immediate cohort. Luke’s leadership extended to collaborations with the American Educational Research Association (AERA) as a member of the Graduate Student Council, where he facilitated new opportunities for graduate students to present their work. In recognition of his exceptional contributions, Luke was awarded the Award for Distinguished Service—presented annually to a graduate student at the University of Kansas who demonstrates a genuine commitment to service while maintaining a high level of academic achievement.
Recognized as a Fellow at Advance HE, Dr. Parker has received numerous awards for his teaching, research, and leadership. His contributions exemplify a commitment to advancing education, fostering meaningful change, and bridging the gap between research and practice across academic institutions and beyond.
