Fatemeh (Melina) Bakhshalizadeh is a PhD candidate in Human Development and Family Studies and minoring in Women and Gender Studies at Iowa State University. She received her Master’s degree in Anthropology from Iowa State University. Her primary research focuses on the effects of immigration policies on the identity, self-esteem, mental health, marital and financial life of spouses of international students in the US, with the goal of informing policy makers and universities. Melina is also involved in collaborative research that focuses on how immigration to the United States affects different categories of immigrants, such as Latino immigrants as well as Afghan, African, and Sudanese refugees to inform the policy makers and organizations including Extension and Outreach about the needs of them to protect and enhance their health and wellbeing in the US as well as their prospects for social integration into American society. Beside examining the effects of migration, Melina also explores how the individuals cope with the challenges they face in post-migration by highlighting the role of the intersectionality of gender, class and culture on resilience as well as community and community organizations.
