STAR Fellow – Prof. Dr. Moses Madubueze Okonkwo (Nigeria)

Prof. Dr. Moses Madubueze Okonkwo was born on November 28, 1955 in Enugu City. He is a native of Aguobu-Iwollo in Ezeagu Local Government of Enugu State, Nigeria. He is married to Mrs. Philipa Nwadiuso Okonkwo (nee Onah) and their marriage is blessed with three children, two girls and a boy.


Prof. Okonkwo holds a Diploma in Building Technology from the Institute of Management and Technology, Enugu, Nigeria (1978); graduated with a Master of Science Degree in Architecture and Urban Design (1987) from the Universidad de Navarra, Pamplona, Spain; and obtained, in 1994, a Doctor of Technical Sciences Degree in Architecture and Urban Development from Warsaw University of Technology (Polytechnika Warszawska) Warsaw, Poland. Apart from his normal and formal educational career, Prof. Okonkwo has also travelled to more than ten different countries, including China and United States of America, for further education and training in science and technology, and institutional administration and management between 1980 and 2016. Currently he is a Visiting Scholar (Sabbatical) at the Hunan Allstar Education Consulting Co. Ltd., Xiangtan City, China.  

In 2008, when he transferred his services from Abia State University, Uturu to the Department of Architecture, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, he was appointed Associate Professor of Architecture. In 2009 he was appointed Provost and he pioneered the establishment of the then Enugu State College of Agriculture and Agro-Entrepreneurship, Iwollo, which he worked to actualize its upgrade in 2015 into a Polytechnic and so he became the pioneer Rector of the present Enugu State Polytechnic, Iwollo.


In his academic and research journey Prof. Okonkwo has held several other positions. He was Professor of Architecture (Visiting) Abia State University, Uturu; and Adjunct Associate Professor of Architecture to other three Universities. Prior to these, he had been Assistant Researcher at the Centre for Research of Southern Countries of the University of Szczecin, Szczecin, Poland; Senior Lecturer at the Department of Architecture, Abia State University having joined the University in 1997. Within this period, Okonkwo has been Head of Departments of Architecture and that of Urban and Regional Planning; taught many courses at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels and served in several Committees at the Department and Faculty levels. He had also coordinated and supervised Doctoral (Ph.D) Programmes in three Departments of Architecture in Nigeria, namely: (a) Coordinator and Member, Doctorate Degree Programme Supervisory Team, Department of Architecture, University of Nigeria Enugu Campus (UNEC), Enugu. (b) Member, Doctorate Degree Programme Curriculum Design Committee, Department of Architecture, Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka. (c) Coordinator, Doctorate Degree Programme Supervisory Committee, Department of Architecture, Abia State University (ABSU), Uturu. (d) Coordinator and Member, Doctorate Degree Programme Curriculum Design Committee, Department of Architecture, Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT), Agbani. He has successfully produced more than fifteen Doctors of Architecture between 2008-2017.

Creative Works: Architectural Designs and Technical Reports:

Prof. Okonkwo has completed more than thirty architectural designs and technical reports spanning from residential buildings, housing estates, student hostels, feasibility and viability reports of various projects especially for private sector investment in Nigeria. His creative scholarly works have centred on strategic investment intervention in tertiary education community economies.
