Dr. Harvey Charles

Dr. Harvey Charles is Professor of International Education in the Department of Educational Policy & Leadership. He has served as the Chief International Officer at a number of universities across the United States, including most recently, at the University at Albany where he was the Dean for International Education and Vice Provost for Global Strategy. In this capacity, he introduced comprehensive internationalization to the university, established a number of strategic international partnerships for the university, and launched a number of initiatives such as the Global Distinction Milestone and Collaborative Online International Learning, among others, to support the preparation of globally competent graduates.

Dr. Charles is an internationally recognized expert on international education leadership. As co-editor, he has published Leading Internationalization: A Handbook for International Education, and is currently co-editor of the second edition of the Sage Handbook of International Higher Education. He has also served as president of the Association of International Education Administrators, the world’s only organization for senior international officers. In addition to publishing on issues including leadership in international higher education, internationalizing the curriculum and comprehensive internationalization, he serves on a number of national and international boards, consults, and gives addresses on international education issues around the world. Charles earned his doctoral degree in Higher Education and Student Affairs with an emphasis in International Education from The Ohio State University in 1991.
