Short Biography

Dr. Jia-Yi Cheng-Levine is the Dean of International Affairs & Global Engagement at College of the Canyons, in Santa Clarita, California. Prior to that role, she was director of the international students program at COC and has been at COC for over 15 years. She came to COC from the University of Houston-Downtown as a Professor of English and has been an instructor in the field for nearly 25 years. A native of Taiwan and an international student herself, Dr. Cheng-Levine earned her Doctor of Philosophy in English Language and Literature, with a special emphasis on Critical Theory, from the Indiana University of Pennsylvania, after having earned her M.A. in English from the University of Georgia.

Detailed Biography

Dr. Jia-Yi Cheng-Levine is the Dean of International Affairs & Global Engagement at College of the Canyons, in Santa Clarita, California. She has been passionate about international education for more than 30 years, stemming from her experience as an international student who came to the US from her native Taiwan. Dr. Cheng-Levine earned her Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in English Language and Literature, with a special emphasis on Critical Theory, from the Indiana University of Pennsylvania, after having earned her M.A. in English from the University of Georgia.

Upon completion of her PhD, Dr. Cheng-Levine joined the faculty of the University of Houston-Downtown as an Associate Professor of English. She served with distinction at that institution for nearly a decade before being welcomed to College of the Canyons as a Professor of English. Throughout her time at COC, Dr. Cheng-Levine has earned numerous accolades and distinctions, rising to become Chair of the Department of English. She has spearheaded many prestigious initiatives for the betterment of COC and its students, including becoming a Faculty Advisor to TEDxCollegeoftheCanyons, a position she continues to hold today, and acting as Coordinator of Celebrating the Humanities.

Dr. Cheng-Levine formally began her pathbreaking work in international education in 2014, when she was selected to be the Director of the international students program at COC (today known as the Office of International Services and Programs (ISP)). Her work at ISP and the dynamic, new growth in COC’s international student population it generated led to her appointment as Dean just 3 years later. She is fluent in Taiwanese, Mandarin Chinese and English and has visited over 50 countries around the world in the course of her efforts to bring COC to the world and bring the world to COC.
