Detailed Biography

I am Emerita Professor of the Internationalisation of Higher Education, Leeds Beckett University, UK and an internationally recognised thought leader, author and researcher in the internationalisation of HE. I am also Honorary Visiting Fellow and member of the Academic Board, Centre for Higher Education Internationalisation (CHEI), UniversitĂ  Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, Milan and have held Visiting Professorships at a range of institutions. I am a member of the Advisory Board of the Journal of Studies in International Education and winner of the EAIE Award for Excellence in Research. I am a Senior Expert at the Global Impact Institute, and former Chair of the EAIE Expert Community on Internationalisation at Home. During the 2020 lockdown I set up a YouTube channel for conversations with international educators around the world.

I founded the influential book series, Internationalization in Higher Education (Routledge) and continue as Series Editor, with twenty books so far published or under contract. My work for universities across six continents and for organisations around the world is extensive, including for the European Commission, European Parliament, British Council, European Association for International Education (EAIE), the International Association of Universities (IAU), DAAD, German Rectors’ Conference (HRK), Brazilian Association for International Education (FAUBAI), NAFSA, Association of Southeast Asian Institutes of Higher Learning (ASAIHL), COIMBRA group, Conference of the Americas on International Education (CAIE), and the International Education Association of Australia (IEAA).

My broad-ranging research interests include internationalisation of curriculum and intercultural competence development, inclusive and integrated internationalisation strategy, and the student experience of internationalisation, including personal and professional outcomes from international mobility. These interests were developed during my time working as International Dean (Senior International Officer) at Leeds Beckett University, which involved practioner as well as strategic leadership dimensions.

Having worked in the field for almost forty years, and lived in several countries, I have extensive international networks and continue to take part in a wide range of international collaborations for research, jointly-authored publications and consultancy. I now view my role as paying forward my experience to upcoming generations of researchers, and particularly enjoy my work in supervising and advising students and early career researchers around the world, as well as supporting authors in my book series.
