2019 Global Connection Award Winner is Dr. Sanjeeb Sapkota!

Dr. Sanjeeb Sapkota has over 19 years of experience working in public health and health care in various positions including as a public health expert, Medical Epidemiologist, Research Scientist, Project manager, Senior Data analyst and Communication Specialist in different government public health agencies including World Health Organization, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Georgia Department of Public Health (DPH) and ministries of health of several countries around the world including Nepal, Zimbabwe, Finland, the Philippines, and the Netherlands. Dr. Sapkota is also an American Heart Association certified instructor for the CPR and AED.

Dr. Sanjeeb Sapkota has held numerous leadership positions including the president of Nepali Medical Student Society (NMSS), International Federation of Medical Student Associations (IFMSA), Nepalese Association in Southeast America (NASeA) and the chairperson of the Global Health & Hygiene Committee of Non-resident Nepali Association-International Coordinating Council.

As the president of NMSS, he made tremendous changes in the national structure and helped align it with the international strucutre that resulted in direct benefits to the medical students of Nepal and the medical education. As the president of IFMSA, Dr. Sapkota traveled to over 35 countries to help empower the national medical students associations in the developing countries. As president of NASeA, Dr. Sapkota helped democratize the organization and streamlined governance and functioning of the organization resulting in greater efficiency and benefits to the members.

In his recent position as the chairperson of the Global Health & Hygiene Committee, Dr. Sapkota helped reshape the perspective on global health. He conducted health camps to help the survivors of earthquake in Nepal, organized health fairs in different parts of the world, assisted hundreds of people learn skills of CPR and AED, coordinated rapid health assessment of the disaster-stricken areas in Nepal, conducted sessions, webinars and seminars to raise awareness on diabetes, heart disease and cancer and major killer diseases among Nepali people. And to add a remarkable feather in his cap of accolades, Dr. Sapkota organized the 1st Global Nepali Health Conference & Health Festival in Atlanta in September 2019.

The 1st Global Nepali Health Conference & Health Festival has meaningful and tremendous impact on Nepali health around the world. The conference was well attended from by participants from different parts of the world and from various places of the United States. The outcomes of the conference were numerous that have direct and indirect impact on the health of Nepali people around the world. One-and-half dozen scientific papers related to the health of Nepali people were presented, a declaration on global Nepali Health was promulgated, a panel discussion with a dozen of health-leaders was held, and sessions on youth health, women health, and safety of employee working at-risk sites were conducted. The conference also brought several organizations together opening new avenues for collaborative projects with international organizations including CARE International, National Network of Public Health Institute have begun.

This pioneering and trailblazing conference has tremendous impact on the health of Nepali people residing in Nepal and those spreading globally as diaspora. Dr. Sapkota has made brought the stakeholders together to make a headway in finding ways and means to maintain and improve health of Nepali people globally and in Nepal by organizing this conference.
